Today, you continued working on your "The Life You Save May Be Your Own" PowerPoint project. Think about the creation process. Which part of creating your presentation has required the most thought or creativity? What choices have you made with your information, images, or slide design to help communicate your understanding of the story? Explain.

The part that required the most thought was choosing which details about the character were most important to include. I had to think about the character’s actions, personality, and how those details connect to the story. I also chose images and a simple slide design that matched the character and made the information easy to understand. These choices helped me explain my ideas clearly instead of just putting a lot of text on each slide. Today in class we worked on the powerpoint the whole class.

Today, you worked on a PowerPoint presentation based on a character from "The Life You Save May Be Your Own." Do you think creating a presentation like this helps you understand a story and its characters better than a traditional worksheet? Why or why not? Explain your answer.

Yes, I think creating a presentation helps me understand a story and its characters better than a traditional worksheet. A presentation makes me look more closely at the character’s actions, personality, and important details from the story. It also helps me organize the information in a more visual and interesting way. Because of that, I remember the character and the story better. Today in class we worked on the powerpoint for the whole class

The title “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” suggests that helping or protecting another person may also benefit you. Describe a time when helping someone else taught you something, changed your perspective, or made a positive difference in your own life.

One time helping someone else made a difference in my own life was when I worked at a tennis camp and helped younger kids improve their skills. At first, I thought I was mainly there to teach them, but I realized that helping them become more confident also made me more patient and responsible. Seeing how excited they were when they finally learned something new showed me how much encouragement can affect someone. That experience changed my perspective because I learned that helping another person can also help you grow as a person. Today in class we started to fill out our 3 character sheets.

Have you ever had a first impression of someone that later turned out to be wrong? What made you form that first impression, and what eventually changed your mind? Based on what you have read so far, what first impression do you have of Mr. Shiflet? Explain what he has said or done that has shaped your opinion of him.

At first, I might judge someone based on how they look or act, but later realize I was wrong after getting to know them better. My first impression of Mr. Shiflet is that he seems mysterious and a little suspicious. He asks strange questions and seems very interested in the old car even though he claims he does not care about money. His actions make me feel like he may have a hidden reason for staying with Mrs. Crater and Lucynell. Today in class we worked on reading the story.

Imagine someone could learn about you only by looking through your trash can. What three items might they find in your trash today, and what would each item reveal about your personality, habits, interests, or life right now?

Three things someone might find in my trash today are a gatorade , a crumpled school worksheet, and a protein bar wrapper . The sports drink bottle would show that I am active and spend a lot of time playing sports or working out. The school worksheet would reveal that school is a big part of my life right now and that I am focused on keeping up with my classes and preparing for college. The protein bar wrapper would show that I am usually busy and like quick snacks, especially when I am going between school, the gym, and other activities. Today in class we finished up the project planning sheet and added all 10 song titles and artists to it.

If someone were using the STEAL method to characterize you, how would they describe you? Select all parts of STEAL and explain what they reveal about your personality.

I would describe myself as hardworking, social, and determined. My speech shows that I am usually relaxed and friendly because I like joking around and talking with my friends, but I can also be serious when something is important. My thoughts show that I care a lot about my future because I think about college, school, and ways I can improve myself. My effect on others is that I try to make people feel comfortable and included, especially when I am around friends or helping younger kids. My actions probably reveal the most about me because I work hard in school, play sports, go to the gym, and have worked at tennis camps helping kids improve their game. My looks also show that I care about presenting myself well and staying active. Today in class we began answering the project planning sheet.

In "The Rockpile", John and Roy do not always receive the same treatment from the adults in their family. Have you ever felt that you or someone else in your family was treated differently from everyone else? What caused the difference, and do you think it was fair? Explain.

Yes I have felt that with my brother. When my parents get mad at someone its always me because I am older even though most of the time its him starting or causing the argument. This makes me mad as I should not be the one getting in trouble but because I am older I do. Food causes the disagreement most of the time as either he doesn't want to share or I don't want to share. Today in class we worked on questions about our reading.

In “The Rockpile,” the children know that the rockpile is dangerous and that they are supposed to stay away from it, but curiosity still draws them toward it. Think about a time when curiosity or temptation caused you to ignore a warning or rule. What happened, and what did you learn from the experience?

A time where temptation caused me to ignore a warning is when I cross the street and jaywalk even though I know its wrong. Some places are just easier accessible by walking across like where I work and sometimes I do it even though I know its wrong. One time a police officer yelled and saw me do it and I learned not to do it again so I don't get in trouble. Today in class we worked on reading listening to a story.

September 11 changed many aspects of American life, even though your generation was born afterward. Think about a major event that has happened during your own lifetime, such as the COVID-19 pandemic or another event that affected your community or the country. How do you think your experience with that event helps you understand what it might have been like for Americans to experience the uncertainty and change following 9/11? Explain the connection.

My experience with Covid wasn't too bad actually, but going remote was hard to get accustomed to. Everyone was not sure on what would happen next, and living a day by day life was the way to go. Finally it got better and we were able to do normal things again like go to school, and hang out with friends. Americans after 9/11 were dealing with the same thing as they didn't know what was going to happen the next day. They knew they needed to strengthen security so it wouldn't happen again. Today in class we took the test about the story.

Emily struggles with letting go of people throughout her life, and the ending reveals the extreme length she went to in order to keep Homer with her. Why do you think some people have such a difficult time accepting loss or change? Connect Emily’s actions to your own observations or experiences with people struggling to let go.

People have such a hard time dealing with loss or change because they do not know what will come next. For example with change you like to eat the same foods because you know you enjoy them and you don't know what will happen when you try something else. Uncertainty is a huge factor in this. Loss as well, when you lose something or someone then your life will be different as you don't have it anymore. This connects well with how Emily struggles to let go. Today in class we worked on finishing the rest of the story and kept analyzing it.

In Part I of A Rose for Emily, Emily’s house stands out from the community and reflects both her past and the changes happening around her. Think about a house, building, or place that holds special memories for you. What does that place look like, what memories do you connect with it, and what does it represent to you?

The country of Georgia holds a special place for me because I had a lot of new experiences there. For example, I tried Georgian food which was awesome, going out with my friends was fun, and just seeing the beauty. I had some of my best memories when we were walking around late at night just exploring the city and seeing cool sights. This place represents change for me as it influenced my growth a lot. I will never forget you, Georgia.  Today in class we worked on analyzing the first 2 sections of the story.

In “Because I could not stop for Death,” Emily Dickinson presents life as a journey that eventually comes to an end. What experiences in your life have reminded you that time moves quickly? How have those experiences affected the way you value your time?

One big experience in my life to remind me that time moves quickly is my first 3 years of high school because now it doesn't even feel real that I'm a senior and I went through them. Its hard to imagine that in another 4 years I'll be almost at the end of my journey in college. Then I have to be an adult and get a life which will come sooner than expected. Now, I value most moments that I have and know I will miss them. Whenever I am in a great moment I take a second to think about that and keep enjoying it. Today in class we read "Because I could not stop for Death" and are doing a creative assignment on it.

In “Missing Your People,” Tracy Brower explains the importance of belonging. Describe a time when you felt like you truly belonged. What created that feeling?

A time when I felt like I belonged is when I joined my tennis team at an academy. At first I felt akward as I didn't know about it and then I started adjusting to it and it became more comfortable. Slowly I felt like a family with this team, over years of course, and it really was fun for me. That feeling came to be with people always encouraging me and trying to get me better, as well as the coaches supporting and helping me throughout the process.

Write about a fear you have overcome.

One fear that I have overcome is the fear of heights. As a kid I really did not like heights and was scared of them but as I grew older I became more accustomed to them. For example when I went on roller coaster that's one thing that helped my fear out and now I love roller coasters. I also have traveled to cool places in the mountains which is pretty high up so I have gotten pretty used to heights.

Think about the word or phrase you find yourself using the most right now. What is it, what does it mean, and why has it become part of your everyday vocabulary? Explain when you typically use it and what your choice of this word or phrase might reveal about you.

One word I use a lot right now is the word "bro." Bro means brother, and it is a form of calling someone. It has became a part of my every day language just because of that's what's popular right now. I typically use it when I talk to a friend or refer to someone. It is apart of my every day speech. In class today we had to answer some questions about the theme topic and analyze different quotes.
